Stony Brook University Shop Red West Plaza

This project was developed in collaboration with the Faculty Student Association at Stony Brook University to reimagine the aging Shop Red West Plaza—a currently underutilized yet highly visible public space at the heart of campus. With major renovations happening nearby, such as the Stony Brook Union, Chavez and Tubman Halls, and East Side Dining, this site needed a fresh design to accommodate increased pedestrian activity, celebrate university pride, and create a welcoming, inclusive space for students and visitors alike.

Analysis
A thorough site analysis uncovered a variety of challenges, including uneven pavement conditions, insufficient lighting, outdated seating arrangements, seasonal vegetation loss, wayfinding difficulties, and an underused amphitheater area. The SWOT analysis showed that while the site is centrally located and easily accessible, its predominantly gray aesthetic, lack of clear signage, and poor environmental performance have limited both usability and overall atmosphere. Key concerns included flooding caused by impermeable surfaces, safety risks from shared pedestrian and vehicle zones, and the absence of design elements reflecting the unique identity of the campus.

Design Ideas
The design envisions Shop Red West Plaza as a lively, multifunctional gateway to campus, featuring the following enhancements:

Plaza Center: A new central plaza anchored by a Wolfie fountain sculpture powered by stormwater, surrounded by spacious stone benches designed for both social interaction and quiet reflection.
John S. Toll Drive: Vibrant painted road surfaces showcasing student-designed murals, clearly marked pedestrian and bike lanes, and designated seating areas for pop-up food trucks.
Living Wall & Circle Garden: A vertical "SBU" garden featuring native Long Island plants, paired with a cozy seating area perfect for photo opportunities and relaxation.
Green Space: A redesigned amphitheater and platform area equipped with lounge chairs, swings, hammocks, and shaded seating options to encourage both casual gatherings and academic use.
Green Roof: An extension of the Shop Red West roof into a rooftop garden and study space, incorporating sustainable features and pollinator-friendly plants.
Lighting & Wayfinding: Wrapped tree lighting, signage integrated with student art, and colorful painted directional paths to enhance safety and ease of navigation.
